Food and Drink

Although much of Europe has lost access to local vegetables and fruits due to the rise of huge supermarket chains, Bulgaria prides itself on buying its produce from local growers. In fact, it’s this local flavour that makes Bulgarian cuisine so fresh and unique. The cuisine of Bulgaria includes many Turkish and Greek influences. Dining throughout Bulgaria will give you a taste for many different cultural varieties.

Much of Bulgarian national cuisine is influenced with traditional characteristics that are local to certain areas. Food is an essential part of many of the festivals that are held throughout the county. You will find that pork dishes and lamb dishes are very popular among many restaurants.

If you are a vegetarian, you won’t be disappointed. Many of the local dishes are primarily vegetarian. This includes everything from salads to a traditional dish of stuffed peppers. Throughout Bulgaria, whether you are a vegetarian or not, you will have no difficulty in finding dishes that will meet your culinary tastes.

Fish, especially in the coastal and mountain areas of Bulgaria, plays a big part in the diet of Bulgarians. One dish that you won’t want to miss is grilled trout, found readily throughout Bulgaria.

Eating in Bulgaria is much the same as in any other European country. A three course meal will cost you about €15 at most restaurants in the city. To dine in less popular areas you can expect to pay about €8 for a three course meal.
