Plovdiv

You will find Plovdiv located 130 km south of Sofia, along the banks of the Maritsa River. Plovdiv is also known as the "City on Seven Hills". The current population of Plovdiv is approximately 350,000 and is one of the largest transport connections within the Balkans. The E 80 (an international route) passes along the outskirts of the city. Plovdiv is only a 2.5 hour drive from the coastline as well as a 30-minute drive from three large mountain ranges. Getting to Plovdiv is easily accessible since the city is home to an international airport. Plovdiv has a climate that is much like the Mediterranean: mild in the winter and hot in the summer.

Location of Plovdiv

Throughout the years, Plovdiv has maintained its cultural and traditional identity despite the influences of economy and politics from both the west and east. Plovdiv is much older than cities such as Athens, Carthage, or Rome. This means that the city is built up on many different layers of tradition and culture.

History of Plovdiv

Plovdiv is a fine combination of the modern and the historic. Within the city you will find a mixture of mediaeval, ancient, and modern traditions that all blend to make the city what it is today. While in Plovdiv you can't afford to miss a visit to the Ancient Theatre, which is one of the most remarkable historic relics of Roman history. At one time the theatre sat over 7,000 and these days is used for concerts, theatre, festivals, as well as celebrations within the community.

The old town of Plovdiv, once a Renaissance town, was built in the 19th century over the span of three hills. Old Plovdiv is a self-ruling region that is located within the more modern city of Plovdiv. In fact, Old Plovdiv has over 150 different monuments that proclaim its architectural wonders from the period of the National Revival. As you walk through Old Plovdiv you will enjoy the charm of narrow and cobbled streets and the many old homes that line them. Many of these older homes have since been altered to hold pubs, museums, restaurants, and galleries.

Plovdiv is a thriving and modern city that is built on traditions. As well, make sure that you take in some of the more modern attractions such as the cinema, concerts, the theatre, and sporting events.

Flourishing Plovdiv

Each year, Plovdiv hosts the International Plovdiv Fair. This fair is one of the largest to be found in southwestern Europe. You can spend many hours looking at the many exhibitions as people gather from all over the world. The International Plovdiv Fair takes place from May 6th to 11th and then again from September 23rd to 28th. The fairgrounds are one of the biggest in the Balkan area, boasting a square footage of 360,000 square metres. Over 7,000 companies will join together to show off their wares, taking up space in 24 separate pavilions throughout the fair grounds.
